More than half of your daily calorie intake is needed for your resting metabolism, also known as basal metabolism (BMR = basal metabolic rate).

Your BMR  determines the minimal amount of calories that you need for the basic functions of your body, such as your breathing, blood circulation and numerous biochemical reactions to keep you alive.
