Our muscle mass consists of 35% of BCAA’s (branched chain amino acids): leucine, isoleucine and valine. These 3 branched amino acids belong to the essential amino acids. This means that we have to take them through food or by taking supplements.
BCAA’s are absolutely necessary for weight training. They prevent protein degradation in the muscle (catabolism) and ensure a faster and better recovery of muscles resulting in increased muscle mass. BCAA’s are best taken before or after training. When taken before training, they will reduce muscle degradation during exercising to a minimum. After training they will ensure maximal protein synthesis, recovery and muscle building.
